Fuck Google

I missed the initial hullabalo surrounding the recent Google Reader fiasco (link goes to the Slashdot discussion).  But I may as well add my thoughts.

Wisdom From Nerdistan

Today’s particular hangover has blunted the all-encompassing rage a bit; so even I have to admit that this piece by Cory Doctorow in InformationWeek is dead on.  It probably explains why I have a grand total of 6 MySpace friends; and of those, one is mythical proto-hominid and one is a presidential candidate.  Or it could be that winos aren’t known for their computer savvy.

Note to self…check if drunkspace.com is taken.

Kindling

I have neither the time nor inclination to rant about the Amazon Kindle.  But I am amused that every bit of commentary pointing out its many flaws is met with a flurry of comments from the Nerdistani defending it.  You chumps would line up for an ass-reaming by a n 800 lb gorilla on meth if there was a computer chip installed…wouldn’t you.

Huzzah!

Wow, usually my complete and utter apathy results in my rants being horribly late; but for a change I was ahead of the curve. Go ahead and commence to fellating each other you mighty Prophets of Nerdistan. Your whining and complaining has slayed the mighty dragon that is Steve Jobs. He has heard your pronouncements and hung his mock-turtle-clad neck in shame. Yes you, and you alone, have forced Apple to announce a SDK for the iPhone

Or, perhaps not. Certainly nothing that anyone says or does will convince you otherwise. So, drink deeply from your flagon of Mountain Dew Code Red! For you have triumphed over a great injustice! It’s still not going to get you anal though.

Musings on the iPhone, Google and Brand Identity Part 2

In Part 1 I proposed the theory that Apple is in the business of selling a branded lifestyle, rather than any specific products. And that it is that very fact that causes the extreme reactions from the nerdistani community whenever Apple does something that the average nerd considers to be “wrong.” In the course of discussing this, I noted that Google also sells a brand, and implied that they actually do a better job of doing so; at least when considering the nerd market. In this part I am going to expound on that point.

Musings on the iPhone, Google, Nerds and Brand Identity Part 1.

I’ve been taking in all the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the tech pundits regarding the so called “bricking” of hacked iPhones with the 1.1.1 update; and I came to a realization about just why the Nerdistanis get so fucking worked up over every last thing that Apple does; and as a corollary why they tend to give a free pass to the bullshit that Google pulls.  It’s all about Identity and Branding.
