The "Apple's hardware is too expensive" argument went belly-up 7-10 years ago. A comparable Windows machine on any front will cost just as much, if not more - and you don't get the same level of support, resale value or build quality on the Windows machine. You're right about two things: 1) Microsoft's software is too expensive and 2) The game has changed, it's just that Apple is way ahead.

The cost of Apple hardware is too high. The cost of Windows software is too high. Someday somebody is going to find the right balance of hardware / software / features at half the current price and then the game will really change.

The scoffers can't be serious that OS X would be more simplified. Simple user experience doesn't translate into simple operating systems. But pay no attention to the programmers behind the curtain. There is some seriously complicated shit happening back there.

This "simplification" is where mass computing users and geek computing users get further apart. The power users were always a little of both—master of common mass computing tools and enough geekery to accomplish quite a bit more. These days, the amount of geek knowledge is becoming less relevant to the power user. Things "just work" already.

iOS has made it possible for more computer newbies to "compute". OS X will lead more to that same experience. The geek in us seems afraid to admit that computing will become less a chore than it already is. I could spend hours tweaking every setting, trying to get my computer to work just right. Why? Some geek testosterone, I suppose. Now I don't need to do any tweaking—well, not to previous levels anyway. More time to compute.

But isn't Siegler fair and balanced?
Oh no wait, that was his bank account; it's fairly balanced since he became a VC.

This guy spewing this kind of crap only further demonstrates that reading his writings has become even less worthwhile than reading the mumbo jumbo printed on my toilet paper.

Hey Lance,
Y'know who needs to spend a million dollars for 30 seconds of airtime during the Super Bowl? Car companies — they've got their new models coming out this month. Beer companies. Snack food companies. You might send your buddy out at halftime to pick up some Doritos and Bud Light.

Y'know who doesn't need to spend a million dollars for that? Somebody who can send you and every other media outlet in the world an email saying, "Hey copyboy, get your ass to my place and I'll make you sit in a big theater and you can see, but not touch, what I'm about to sell 30 million copies of."

What did these people do before Apple brought the Shiny? Oh right. They got in a tizzy over Microsoft's concept videos for products they had no intention of ever releasing.

Cell phones and laptops didn't change for nearly 25 years. But if Apple doesn't reinvent the wheel every spring, it's an unmitigated disaster. What a dismal collection of drama queens the tech press is...

Do we need 2 different companies selling bottle opener iPhone cases, though?

Who knows? More importantly, who cares. If a dozen companies think it's worth their while to spend a few grand to exhibit bottle opener iPhone cases who are we to argue otherwise. It's a free market.

I'm curious as to what a fucking sphere is. Is it an accessory to that iPad case with a flesh light in it?

Great post as always Darby. I for one hope that Macworld|iWorld stays around for many years, having been a vendor on the floor many years back it was a great way to meet with your customers and drum up new business.
