I won­der how many of the “hur dur the iPad can’t be a post-PC device if you have to acti­vate it via a PC” crowd, such as the Tellarite will eat their words when Apple unveils OTA acti­va­tion as a part of iOS 5? It seems that, more and more, the Apple focused tech media has become inun­dated by cov­er­age based on rumor­mon­gery. Of course, it’s under­stand­able why this is hap­pen­ing. The sim­ple fact of the mat­ter is that adver­tis­ing gen­er­ates the rev­enue in this busines, and mak­ing money through adver­tis­ing means max­i­miz­ing page-views. Sadly, in our ever pruri­ent tech press, noth­ing brings in the eye­balls like spec­u­lat­ing on what Apple is going to do next.

The Incredibly Credulous Tech Press

Yesterday I spec­u­lated that it would take less than 24 hours for this spec­u­la­tion from Apple pun­dit extra­or­di­naire John Gruber to be accepted as gospel truth by the tech press. Apparently I need to re-calibrate my already abysmal expec­ta­tion of the media; because no more than 3 hours after mak­ing that pre­dic­tion I walked into my local bar and was inun­dated with pan­icky fear that the next iPad was being delayed until Fall. Keep in mind that I’m talk­ing about nor­mal peo­ple here, peo­ple who think that “Gruber” is the bad guy from Die Hard.
