Be Happy or Else

I’ve recommended Barbara Ehrenreich’s critique of “positive thinking” Bright-sided in various venues before. I heartily recomend that everyone read the book. As a teaser, here is a short animation of a lecture by Ms. Ehrenreich based on the book. It’s funny, and absolutely true.

Fantastic. Thanks for posting this. It directly addresses the garbage a “motivational speaker” spewed in front of a former employer’s annual all-hands meeting (where dozens of people who’d been given their termination dates had already been expected to show interest in the company’s sales forecasts). He claimed that skill was less important than attitude. His proof: exhorting volunteers to punch their way through a piece of wood. I kept hoping for Judd Apatow to yell “Cut!”

I thank Satan every day that the only people who buy into this crap in my company are the SalesDouches.

Again I can’t recommend the book Bright-sided enough. There is a whole section given over to this topic, and the lecture in the video comes directly from the book. I think it’s even available in the iBookStore.
