Holy shit, a TWITTER FOUNDER is lecturing the rest of the world about the "digital economy"?? What "digital economy" does this twat know the first fucking thing about? The one where you feast on the teat of venture capitalists for years and years while you keep drawing blanks on how to pay for your massive infrastructure expenses? Forget making a profit, Twitter can't even figure out how to break even. Yeah, that "hacker culture" is really paying off!

Meanwhile, the fucking evil Apple culture employs 20,000 people, has amassed a $185B market cap, with zero debt and $35B in cash... while thousands of competent developers are profiting handsomely from the mean old "closed system".

Boy, that's rich.

The other point that Payne misses, which I didn't get into, is that the iGadgets are completely hackable. You just don't hack them by doing shit on the device itself, you buy a Mac, download the iPhone SDK and hack to you heart's content. You don't even have to submit to the App Store and deal with DRACONIAN CONTROLS if all you want to do is play locally.

It's hugely amusing to read stuff like Payne's moaning at the same time everyone else is raving about Android in the Nexus One. Clearly, Payne is looking to sandbag a long-awaited device. I always get the impression that people like this are, in the deepest, darkest corners of their personal closets, slavering to buy one of the devices they bemoan. They just fear it'll do some kind of perceptual damage to whatever persona they've worked to create.

Maybe they should shut the fuck up and put hands to whatever they're talking about before they talk about it.

Apple hasn't been the hippy-dippy hacker company since the Apple //e and Woz left. Heck I don't think there is a more closed system than the phone system (especially back in the 60's) and the 2 Steves sold illegal hacking devices for the phone system before starting Apple.

I learned BASIC on a mainframe, then Applesoft on a Apple ][+ at high school, then an Apple //e at home. Once I wanted to move to another language (specifically 6502 assembly for me) I needed a pirated assembler (cough, there is a statute of limitations on pirating software right?) because I couldn't afford to pay for one.

Now I can get Xcode for free and write Mac stuff in many languages. I can even, for free, write iPhone OS stuff (simulator only) but you do have to pay $99 to load it onto your own devices, which you just paid at least $499 for. Plus the general use, hackable computer you have to plug it into.
