I agree. I think that it's a very good thing that both the iPhone 3G S and iPhone OS 3.0 are evolutionary steps. The very concept and execution of the iPhone was the revolutionary move. It would be counter-productive at this point to attempt to revolutionize the smartphone market every year.

I kinda like that the new iPhone is.... underwhelming, and I'm gonna tell you why.

Remember the SNL skit about the iPod Invisa? Kinda funny (as funny as SNL can be since Phil Hartman died). But also a bit of truth in there. At the time, Apple was "innovating" at a very rapid pace. The iPod evolved at a rapid pace. People noticed, and that got Apple lots of attention and eventually sold them a lot of iPods. But you'll notice the iPod didn't REALLY take off until it kind of settled into a familar form (and worked on Windows).

And here's my fucking point: It's cool to watch companies go apeshit making awesome new stuff, but 95% of the consumer base out there doesn't want that. They fear it. They're afraid (probably rightfully so) their new gadget won't work in 6 months, and Apple got dinged for that (definitely rightfully so).

So now, they're selling a phone; as generic a market as possible. Who buys phones? EVERYONE. Well, everyone doesn't want the breakneck pace of the early iPod. So they've slowed it down with the iPhone, even making it LOOK the same, as not to freak people out. When people see the same form factor, they assume it will work the same as the previous model. (People are dumb.)

Apple is taking it slow, and as some have mentioned, removing all the barriers to acceptance. One of the barriers is fear of obsolecence. So they're calming that fear with the familar. Nothing to drastic, nothing too flashy...just the good ol' iPhone everyone knows and loves, and wants to open their wallet to.

Sorry for the long-winded ramble.

And in fact, they're doing this across the board with all their product lines. When was the last Mac Pro form change? Years ago. MacBook? New construction methods, but looks pretty much the same. iMac...changed colors a few years back, but has kept the same form factor for years now.
