Well…

that settles it. I’m no longer in the market for an AppleTV. MacMini HTPC here we come.

Um, Apple TV can play HD content, so why is it that an announcement that Apple is selling HD movies make you no longer consider buying an Apple TV?

Because prior to today you could only purchase or rent HD movies from the AppleTV. The announcement was that you can now purchase/rent them from iTunes. Hence no more advantage for the AppleTV.

However, the AppleTv is still the only device (sold by Apple) with an HDMI port. DisplayPort and TOSLink just don’t cut it, IMHO.

The AppleTV is still happily fanless and hackable. It has a good variety of HTPC outputs and under the hood it’s really just good old OS X. You could even install Linux if you want a little more control.

I just wish Hulu would let me view their content through Boxee again…
