Gods Damned Brilliant

Masterful piece from Matt Taibbi at the rollingstone.com deconstructing the media’s coverage of the Presidential election and what the real issues in America are.

    God Damned Bullshit

“But for five billion a year,” Sanders insists, “we could provide basic primary health care for every American. That?s how much it would cost, five billion.”

That works out to about $17 per person PER YEAR. If you believe this, you’re an idiot. This is so ludicrous, it doesn’t even qualify to fall under the header of the usual extreme left wing nonsense.

Joe, that actually sounds about right with economies of scale, and not everybody using the government-provided healthcare. Other countries seem to manage it just fine.

You are either completely and utterly brainwashed by the left, or have no conception of simple costs and basic math. If he would have said 50 billion, I would have left exactly the same comment, but update the annual figure to $170 — that’s how far removed from reality this guy’s statement is — c’mon, are you kiddin’ me?! $17 barely buys you a bottle of aspirin these days.

Thanks for the link. I probably would have missed an –excellent– article, otherwise.

    @ Joe

“$17 barely buys you a bottle of aspirin these days.”

And yet my annual payments into Blue Cross was only a –fraction– of the cost of my wife’s lumbar-fusion surgery, and continuing follow-up care.

Why can’t $5-billion cover the bill? Don’t most health plans –depend– on the currently-healthy subsidizing the cost of treating the currently-ill??

It would only be your $17-per-person if every person in the US sought treatment in a given year.

For the record, here is Senator Sanders’ full proposal. It’s a bit more nuanced than the Rolling Stone quote would indicate.
