Mommy, Apple’s Being Mean Again

Over at TUAW.com they’re running a story under the headline “Are iPhone app devs getting a raw deal?” The gist of the post is that iPhone devs are possible getting boned because Apple apparently won’t be cutting them a check until the developer’s cut of the revenue is at least $250.00 (this is based on a rumor, mind you). Here’s a particularly whiny quote from the story:

From the (indie) developer’s perspective, this stinks. They’ve already paid at least $99 just to participâté, and now they have to wait until they make (potentially) hundreds of sales before they see a dime from Apple. Will the high barrier for entry discourage truly good app development? Or will it act like a cover charge to keep out the riffraff?

Gruber over at Daring Fireball has this to say:

If you’re thinking in terms of a couple hundred dollars, your app probably isn’t even going to get listed in the App Store. The App Store isn’t going to be like VersionTracker or MacUpdate, where every piece of junk gets listed as it’s submitted.

I’d say John is correct, but let’s go a little

Mind Boggling Stupidity

This piece of utter retardation just popped up on my radar; and, after a solid round of bashing my head against my keyboard, I was compelled to comment. The short version is, Chris Anderson at Wired is making the argument that the availability of enormous clouds of data will allow scientists to eschew the scientific method and just pull conclusions from correlations within “the cloud.” His main argument for this, Google doesn’t have a proper model of why PageRank works, but it does so, there you go.

Ars Technica provides a better rebuttal of the scientific points that I feel like writing; so I highly suggest that you read that. But I do have some comments I’d like to make.

To start, why, for the love of Ahura Mazda, must every Web 2.0 dork conflate Google with the rest of the gods damned universe. First, Google is an advertising company, nothing more, nothing less. The sooner you nerds realize that everything that comes out of Google Labs is directed at creating a pool of eyes to view those ads, the less disappointed you’ll be when reality comes crashing down. Second,

Open Letter to Steve Jobs

Steve, my man, for the love of all that’s holy, just rename Software Update to “Apple Magic Installer Program” or something so that idiotic link-baiting douchebags like this can shut the fuck up.

More Fun From the Psystards

Good lords I just had an aneurysm. I just noticed via MacNN that the nimrods over at Psystar are shipping “servers” with Leopard as an option. What sort of rampaging moron would actually run a hackintosh as a proper server? I can understand the impetuous for the average freetard to build a hackintosh for personal use. They’re cheap bastards, and I suppose there is a certain enjoyment in the process of shoe-horning OS X onto unsupported hardware. But a fucking 1U server? Quick question for anyone seriously considering blowing a minimum of $2,000 on one of these turds. Who, exactly, do you think is going to provide support for this abomination. I can guaran-fucking-tee it won’t be Apple. If I was a CIO and found one of these things sitting in my racks the shit-cannnings would happen so fast that space-time itself would break.

The Great iPhone Price Debate

I’m not going to be arsed to dig up any links to the ongoing debate over whether the iPhone 3G is or isn’t actually cheaper, or a good deal. Instead I’m going to sum this up in simple terms even the simpletons in the blogokleinbottle can understand:

If you already own an iPhone (2G) and don’t have a critical need for aGPS or 3G speeds (assuming that you are in a market that supports 3G). Don’t buy the iPhone 3G, it’s a bad deal.

If you don’t own an iPhone, or you have a crucial need for aGPS or 3G speed (assuming that you are in a market that supports 3G). Buy the iPhone 3G, it’s a good deal.

There, are we all clear? Now go back to speculating on el Jefe’s health; or whatever it is you nerdlingers do when I’m not paying attention.

This Is Why Reason Matters

Today this story popped up on my radar via Skeptico. The basic story is, the classroom aide of an autistic girl in Ontario Canada went to a “psychic” who cold-read the aide and came to the determination that the autistic girl was being sexually abused. Now, in a rational world, when presented with this allegation the local child services agency would dismiss it outright. In this world however they mindlessly sent forth a case worker to investigate. Of course, the charges were bull-shit, and the mother was exonerated immediately. But still, this poor woman has had her life turned upside down, her child traumatized, and an entry made in the child services records (believe me, child welfare services record all allegations, regardless of the final disposition of the case.).

This is why reason matters. I know that what I’m about to write may offend some of my friends, and I sincerely apologize for that, but it must be said. This is the result of a society that devalues reason and extolls the virtues of blind faith. Sure this time around it was some woo-slinging con-woman making the allegation. But what happens when the allegations come

Google Ain’t All That

I’ve been following various forum and blog posts regarding the Apple MobileMe announcement; and I see a trend that’s beginning to annoy me. Inevitably, at some point someone will make a comment along the lines of, “I don’t see why anyone would bother with this when there’s Google Mail, Calendar, etc.” Without going into an analysis of the MobileMe service itself (hard to do when it doesn’t exist yet), I am constantly annoyed by this sort of short-sighted thinking. Heaven forbid that Apple, or anyone for that matter, dare to attempt to compete with the mighty Google.

I hate to break it to the Googletards, but there is more to the internet and computing that Google. Some of us have compelling reasons for wanting a competing service. Here’s just a single one that is a factor for me. Seamless desktop and remote integration. I’ve been dying for a seamless way to integrate my desktop workflow (iCal, Mail, iLife) with both the web, and with the Windows machines that I have to use at work. And, before I get a slew of comments pointing out how to integrate with Google’s services, I know about them; I even am currently using some

Thoughts on the iPhone 3G Pricing

Now that the blogokleinbottle is coming down from the WWDC keynote crack-hits, some of the denizens of blogoland are realizing that the iPhone 3G isn’t actually the second coming of Jesus (gasp!) One of the biggest themes that I’m picking up surrounds the pricing changes. I’m not going to link to any of the various posts breaking down the price; because, gods know, I’m lazy and you can’t swing a dead hobo without hitting someone blogging about it. The bottom line is, the price of the two iPhone 3G models come down by $200; but the data plan and SMS charges have gone up. In the end, as a few sites have pointed out, you will end up paying more for the iPhone 3G over the life of the 2 year contract.

My view on this is: So what?

I’m betting that iPhones are still gonna fly off the shelves like Marina Sirtis blow-up dolls at a Star Trek convention. What the vast majority of the blogtards fail to get is, pricing is all about perception. Why else are the prices “$199″ and “$299″? It’s been shown time and again that consumers latch on the the first digit in the
